I am currently setting up a smart home using Z-wave switches (using Staples Connect hub), but have found this to be fairly expensive.

I have done some research and found that Vivint uses Z-wave sensors.

Has anyone had success using Vivint sensors with another hub?

I have been thinking of posting on craigslist to purchase used sensors/locks/camera from people who have discontinued their Vivint service, to integrate with my hub.

In theory, this should work, but has anyone done this?

If they really are zwave sensors then yes. But those alarm panels have 2 radios inside and most of the alarm sensors are not actually zwave.
