I installed the standard 6" recessed hihats in white color. I am interested in painting my ceiling a dark color now and do not want the hihats to stand out. So can i simply buy black baffles and black trim rings and swap them out?

Go to the manufacturer's web site and see the different trims they have available. Most will have a black baffle available. But I have found that the trim ring will still be white since most people have a light colored ceiling. You'll have to paint the trim ring with black spray paint.

I vote for just painting them. I painted all of mine and they came out fine.

I also spray painted some of mine as well and it worked out well. I used Flat Black spray paint.

Old.

Painted mine as well. I looked at some black baffles to match my ceiling but they simply didn't justify the added expense.

I spray painted as well, but used a satin so that it could be handled easier with my hands - think it was Krylon Satin Black or something. My painting is flat black - can't tell the paint difference in the cans.

You have to lightly spray on the inside, rotate it, then continue spraying. Let it dry, then do another coat. The rings on the other hand, due to the plastic nature, didn't take paint as well as I had hoped. The paint didn't end up 100% even on the rings, but was fine as no one could really ever notice (especially with the lights on).

I started out with big old 6 inch cans, then ended up getting some "pinhole" baffles that have a 2 1/2 inch hole, used 30 and 50 watt reflector spot lights. Painted the baffles to match the ceiling with a spray paint.

I like the idea of changing the trim/baffle to a pinhole-style look. Its alot more elegant than the plain-jane cheap white trim i have.

I also see the 6" black kits on ebay for only 7$.

Great. Thanks for the input....
