OK --- I thought I heard blu-ray was going to win a few months ago and then I hear walmart bought like 3 million HD-DVD players or something?

Which won will probably win I want to buy one? And no I'm not just going to go ahead and buy a $800 blu-ray or hd-dvd player until one will clearly win thanks :)

Is it still up in the air? Any idea when I should check again? probably not in the next 3-6 months?

If you ask here anyone will tell you that BD is the sure winner.

If you ask in the HD DVD area they will either tell you that dual format is the way to go, or HD DVD.

You really need to make up your own mind.

fwiw I love my PS3 and have no plans to buy an HD DVD player. I might get a dual format one day if Universal never goes neutral.

edit: if you buy a ps3 it will always be a ps3 and there will be new content for it for years to come, no matter what happens in the format war

Your asking in A BD forum, so you will get a BD answer, same thing will happen in the HDDVD forum of course.

Buy Both!

Yea well I was hoping some people might have some important news or information as opposed to just saying "blu-ray rocks!"

Basically it comes down to Universal, if you can wait or do without then blu-ray is fine.

But you realize that we don't actually know what these corporations plan to do.
You're going to have to spend a few hours and browse through the forum if you want to avoid biased replies on what to buy. Disseminate the information for yourself, and make the decision. Both formats have good things and bad things going for them right now.
BD has the sales lead for the year.

BD has consistently held the sales lead month to month.

BD holds the sales lead since inception.

HD-DVD is releasing more catalog titles.

BD is releasing more blockbuster titles.

Overall BD has the most titles.

Overall HD-DVD is releasing titles at a faster rate.

Both are equally(on average) good in Video Quality.

Both are equally(on average) good in Sound Quality.

Take a look at the tier rating threads.

Put a check mark next to each title you think you would buy. Choose the format with the most checks.

Both will be around for a while. Each is having it's ups and downs right now. And FYI. The Walmart deal was a rumor.

Wow great thanks for the info.
I'd wait a little bit longer.

Blu-Ray just changed their specs and most of their current players for BD-J are still lacking advanced audio codec decoding.

Future Blu-Ray players will have:

Two display processors for IME features.

Internal audio decoder for new lossless audio codecs.

HDMI 1.3 (Vastline Sil 9134).

Ethernet Port for interactivity features.

You will want all these things eventually.

Personally I am looking at the new Samsung dual format player. If it is full featured for both codecs, I will be buying one. If not, I will wait longer. I don't want something that is missing features on down the line. Especially if I am paying a grand for it.

In that case spend $300-$350 how on the Toshiba HD-A2 now, and if/when blu-ray players drop to that price point re-evaluate if you want one.

IMO, both formats will be around a year from now, so I'm not sure what you're waiting for, unless it's a dual format player (it will be a very long wait if you're waiting for one of the formats to "lose").

Important news or information, that's actually reliable, here amongst all the BS?????

I laughed so hard that I almost soiled myself.
Buy a player in each format. You can grab a Toshiba HD-A2 for something like 350 or less and either get a PS3 or wait a few months for the next gen blu ray players that should be around 500 or less.

If you have the cash and truly enjoy movies being presented in top quality (to be perfectly honest I think many of the people in these next gen forums don't and their priority is fighting and rah rahing over their format of choice) then buying both is the way to go for now and IMO anyone who disagrees just is being biased and/or has some weird attraction to their format of choice where they think it makes them a better human being or something.

If one format loses then the player and the discs in that format arent going to suddenly self destruct like in inspector gadget.

As you can probably tell I support both formats and am happy I do and couldn't care less if one eventually wins. Also, both formats are pretty much darn near equal in terms of real world performance. If you reaaalllllllllly want to just get one player then do as mentioned above and look at the lists of movies (as well as the studios and what movies they have) and see which format has more of the flicks you'd want.

I will say that if someone held a gun to my head to pick one format for the long term I'd probably say go blu ray not because I think it is better or anything but just because it seems like it will continue to be the sales leader and that is what matters I guess in the grand scheme of things.

Since we are in the BD forum, BD won, right? Then think about how many DVD player have you bought? More than 1 and maybe a few, or even MANY for some people. It will be just the same for BD. Better and cheaper BD player will come and we will buy them over and over again!

My PS3 is perfectly fine (in fact, GREAT!) as a current BD player. In time when better and cheaper BD player comes I'm sure many will get another player too. Otherwise what else should we talk about on this forum?

why not just get a dual format player? If you're looking at spending $800....You're not going to have to worry about the war then, and freely pic whatever movie you want

If you have an xbox 360 or a good HTPC, buy the xbox drive (Its $199 with 3 free movies at Circuit City) That's the best deal by far. Rent movies rather than buying if you are worried about HD DVD not dominating.

Less than $200 to invest that way...

agree with your list except for 3 of them (one is wrong and two need restating)

how can that be? especially considering you pointed out that in less months BD has more titles?

I would say they depend on a title by title basis. For example BD has many more titles with lossless audio, but on some titles (like Happy feet ) Warner dcided to add lossles to the HD DVD but not the BD in order to try and push the more expensive combo disk

By 1Q 2008 you should be able to enjoy both for under $300 a side with $200 left over for a netflix subscription.

At this current point in time, HD-DVD is releasing more titles. Previously HD-DVD wasn't releasing hardly any titles giving BD a chance to get more titles.

IE, even though the trend shifted earlier in the year. The trend as of now is HD-DVD is leading releases, albeit they are catalogs.

Make sense?

And for the 2nd, which is why I said.. On average. Meaning BD makes up for sound with PCM, whereas HD-DVD makes up for their end with DD+ over DD and maybe the occasional infrequent inclusion of lossless over DD.

And Video quality is a wash.... There are turds on both sides, and there are stunning tranfers on both sides. Regardless of codec's, regardless of format.

I finally broke down a few weeks ago and went neutral because I suspect we are in for a longer wait then we bargained for. I have to say I am enjoying my PS3 a lot, I just wish they would come out with a firm ware update for the WTW and BTB. If I had to predict a winner I would probably put my money on BR even though I would rather see HD DVD win. My opinion could change if the PQ of BLURAY becomes at least equal to HD DVD, but for now I think HD DVD has an edge in this area IMO. The PS3 kills my XA2 in control flexability and speed and I love the Bluetooth remote IMO.
