Long story short, I have a TV with only HDMI that I need to plug in composite, component, etc.

Can I use a cheap receiver that scales to do this, while still using the TV speakers? Are there any other suggestions anyone has?

no, because for the non-HDMI sources the audio will not pass through to the TV. you can switch the video easily and have it all convert to a single HDMI output to your TV.... but the non-HDMI audio will not be "upconverted" to HDMI audio output.

even if you aren't interested in surround sound, maybe just buy a decent inexpensive pair of speakers and run a stereo setup with a cheap AVR that can convert the video to a single HDMI output to the TV. It will still sound a zillion times better than the TV speakers and you can accomplish your goal.

It's not that I don't want speakers, its just that there are no room for it. This is a bedroom TV, and it's a Hitachi super-thin model with only 1 HDMI mounted in a corner that has no room for any speakers anywhere. I have a full Def Tech system in the basement with a 63" Fujitsu for movie-watching...this is just for occasional TV for us and the kids.

It has a 3.5mm audio jack for use with VGA, which won't do me much good. I looked a little closer at the specs (42X902), and it looks like, with an adaptor, I can use the VGA as a composite input. That, along with an HDMI switch, should accomplish what I need, for far less then the cost of a receiver or Hitachi's media box. Thanks!

How about a pair of in wall or in ceiling speakers?

Leon makes an LCR that is 1.5" deep and mates perfectly with the new ultra thin TVs. The HZ-212-LCR can be found here: http://www.leonspeakers.com/hz212.html

The other option, is to use a video switcher like the DVDO by Anchor Bay, although you would want to make sure it passes audio. Or if the receiver has pre-outs, is to use the receiver to switch video sources and send the pre-out of the front two channels to the HDMI analog audio input on the TV.

This does not sound 100% correct, if I understand you correctly.

My Yamaha RX-V3900 does seem to send audio via HDMI from my DVD player connected with analog audio.

This sort of feature may not occur on cheaper models though.

That is a pretty cool feature if true, as I had never heard of any AVR's which will convert a non-HDMI audio input and send it out to the monitor via HDMI.

However, I doubt the OP is looking in that price range to use as a video switcher for the bedroom.

I am sure not.

One observation I have about this feature - I suspect few people have ever tested to see if their receiver does it. So it's hard to say what receivers support it, and what receivers don't.
