I would really like to have 4 of the same size speakers (1 in each corner) to play my digital piano and fill the room equally. The problem is, since this will double as my home theatre setup, when I watch a movie the rear channels will be played through large floor standing speakers. How will this effect the home theatre sound?

Also, if you think this is not the way to go for my digital piano, let me know!

A short answer, hopefully others will add more:

There's no reason why it should be a problem, and lots of people like that setup.

The main question is whether the speakers are especially directional, so that there's only one spot in the room (where they all point to) that sounds good. That is, do those speakers have enough dispersion to work for HT?

There are pluses though:

- since all the speakers are the same, they will all be perfectly matched sonically. you won't be thinking "those 2 don't sound quite the same as the other ones ..." which is good if you're mostly using it for 2 channel sources.

- often people have weak rear speakers, won't be a problem with what you describe.

The real issue is finding a center channel so that the dialog etc on movies comes through well. You really want one if you're going to use it more than occasionally for HT.

You really need to say which speakers you have in mind if you want people to comment.

P.S. You might want to stick to one thread on this topic ....

For many, 5 identical speakers is the ideal for HT (and certainly for surround sound)

i think if you set all four speakers to the a/b channels there will be no problem with the piano (think quad setup)

i think setting the rear speakers to surround for the piano will not work real well because the receiver will not know what signal to send to them. JMO.

experts correct me if i am giving mis information

If the reciever has an "All Channel Stereo" setting the speakers as surrounds would be fine, but if not, yeah it's something to consider since Pro Logic II or whatever is not going to give every channel an equal signal.

But as far as using the same speaker all around for home theater?

It'll sound great.
