Can I use my Bi-Amp feature of receiver to power subwoofers?

432 Views 5 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Bill Fitzmaurice

I am considering building 2 sealed subwoofers and will not be able to afford an amp at the same time. The subwoofers will be 6ohm impedance and I have a Denon X4000 receiver which is more than capable of a 6ohm load.

If I use the bi-amp feature on the receiver will it create a bandpass crossover for the subwoofers or will I have to purchase passive low pass crossovers?

Some will, most won't. Your manual will say. If your AVR doesn't specifically configure the unused channels for subs then you'll have no way of sending the LFE. Build one sub, buy an amp, add the second sub when you can afford to.

I planned to save for an Emotiva XPA-200 to power the subwoofers... This would allow for significant headroom and proper clean power. I already have a subwoofer but I am looking to build significantly better subs with scanspeak or sb acoustics drivers. I don't think I could spring another $900 at once to buy the amp and build one subwoofer.

Your wasting a lot of money using that for subs. Half of what you're paying for is how well it works in the midrange and high frequencies where you'll never use it with a sub anyway.

Hmm.. It seems to be quite a cheap amplifier to me... I am having a lot of trouble finding another amplifier that puts out ~ 200 clean watts at 6ohms that's less. I do not have XLR out or 1/4 out on my receiver and I do not like the cheap adapters required to use DJ amplifiers. Are there any other options you know of?
