I am looking to buy my first Blu-ray. I currently have an older model Panasonic 50 inch plasma. I do not have any available HDMI inputs on it. My current DVD is connected via component. It is useless to buy a Blu-ray without an available HDMI input or 1080p capable TV? If so, can anyone recommend the good 1080p Panasonic 50 inch plasma.

If your TV can only go up to 720p, you could connect a BD player with Component. But you'd need a 1080p set to be able to fully display what BD is capable of. Any of the Panasonic Plasmas with 'PZ' in the model number can do 1080p (PZ80U, PZ85U, PZ800U, PZ850U).

Not useless at all. Component input will display 720p/1080i video signals. 1080p movies on Blu-ray disc will be HD, just not full resolution, versus 480i/p SD DVDs.

DO IT.

I have a 720p Projector, and my HD-DVD player and Blu Ray Player blow away regular DVDs.

In both HDMI/DVI or component.

To go even farther, you can see the difference on my 42" 480p plasma !

Ask yourself if ESPN NFL-HD looks better @ 720p on your 50 ?
