The 2012 model Onkyo TX-NR818 can use the pre-outs for 9.1, according to the manual. That way you can use front wide or high speakers powered by an external amplifier to get two extra channels. The Onkyo TX-NR828 is just the 2013 refresh of this model, but the manual gives no mention of this capability.... Does anyone know if the 828 it allows doing that using the pre out connections as well?

Here are the backs of both models:

I am giving this thread another chance... Anyone know if the Onkyo TX-NR828 has the processing and inner wiring and software capable to produce 9.1 channel audio?

Because that one also has pre-outs... or are there any others that offer processing (but not amplifying) of 9 or 11 channels?

Thanks for your reply!

I thought as much. However, this does seem like a software issue doesn't it? Why would 9.1 processing or higher require a different chip (or DSP or whatever)? Then I think they just want us to buy the more expensive versions...
