Can I watch in High Def and record in Standard Def?

I just got an HDTV (Mitsubishi LT-46131, 46" LCD, 1080p). For the past several years I have been watching DirecTV on a old 27" tube and using a DVD Recorder. I want to know if I will be able to watch shows in HD and record them at the same time in SD. I will be upgrading to DirecTV HD or course

Please advise, I'm quite worried about this...

the older hr10-250 hd tivo from directv does not output sd/480i (to the dvd recorder to record)and hd component/hdmi (to the tv to watch in HD) at the same time. not sure if the new hr20-250 hd dvr or H20 HD receivers do this or not. there is a hack to get the hr10-250 to output over sd and hd outs at the same time though. check the tivo community underground/upgrade section.

the Tivo S3 hd dvr does output both SD/480i (svideo/rca) and HD (hdmi/component) from it's outputs at the same time so if you had one of thise you could send the SD out to your dvd recorder and the HD to your tv and watch HD while your dvd recorder was recording SD. With the hd dvr you could record and watch later or send SD copy out to the dvd recorder whenever you wanted.

Yes. Connect your recorder with S-video output from HD receiver, with component or HDMI to your TV. You can watch HD and record at the same time, and of course schedule recordings as needed. The S-video output from my Hughes HD unit is in 16:9 format. Quality is super...

I have the Directv H20 HD receiver. Will both HDMI and S-video output jacks work simultaneously? Thanks.
If I wanted to record off of the HD DVR (have newer version) onto DVD, all I need to do is hook up the DVD recorder to the DVR with S-video cable while the show off the DVR is playing on the TV?
svideo, or the yellow rca composite and the red/white rca composite cables for audio from your hd dvr into your dvd recorders inputs should work fine to record. as mentioned above sometimes the HD outputs (to your tv) and the SD outputs (to your dvd recorder) are not working at the same time, so depends on your setup whether you can watch it on the tv and record to the dvd recorder at the same time.

I do not know about the H20. Call Directtv and ask them.... or better yet, hook it up and find out...

I would do the hook-up before the show is playing.

But, yes, S-Vid and R/L line audio are the connections you need for the best recording the DVDR can do. If your HD DVR has a hard drive, you can start transfering from the hard drive to the DVDR, go to bed, and the program will be done when you get up.
