No one seems to be able to give me a for sure answer. The model number on this tv is 46H84 the new model from Toshiba for this year. In a few issues ago in Consumer Reports it says that last years model the 46H83 that it is capable of displaying 720p unlike many of the models. What do they mean capable?

Yes it can display it.

No it can not display it natively.

meaning that if you give it a 720p input it will display a picture unlike older sony set of the mitsubishi sets.

But that 720p input will be converted to 1080i.

Well that sucks, I was hoping that it could output a true 720p picture not upconvert to 1080i. So I guess I'm stuck with crappy 1080i upconversion from 720p. I wonder if 720p upconverted to 1080i looks better then 480p upconverted to 540p?

I own a Toshiba and it is a 56 inch. It accepts all 480p 720 and 1080i

It upcoverts the 720 to 1080

I surmise capable means exactly what it says. It is capable of producing that signal.

Most of these sets operate off a cable box or sattelitte HD tuner.

In the tuner box you have to go into the set up to select 1080 0r 720 display,

What happens after that is up to the tv. It can natively display the 720 or 1080

Most Crt projection are capable of displaying 1080 and others can do both 720 and 1080

Check the website www.toshiba.com and see how your tv will perform. No matter if it is 720 or 1080 the picture will be stunning.

There is an ongoing debate which format is better. That has yet to be resolved, and it may never be resolved

Well personally I think 720p beats the hell out of 1080i with ease. The ression is because the entire picture is displayed at once and that means it can display the heavenly 60fps that I love so much for gaming. Yes they might have close to the same amount of pixles being displayed at once but 1080i is only displaying half of them with alot of fliker and that sucks in my opinion. They should just stop supporting 1080i and go full 720p.

Then why did you get the 1080i Toshiba and not a 720p fixed pixel display?

There are no consumer CRT RPTVs capable of native 720p. The electronics required are just too expensive for a consumer television.

Only digital displays like LCD, LCOS, and DLP can do 720p without lossy conversion. But of course, they require lossy conversion of 1080i.
