Can Now Turn Off Dolby Vision On New Sony TV

17996 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Hello!
There are times when I prefer to watch TV shows and movies in HDR 10 rather than in Dolby Vision. (I know, I know). In the past, when using my Apple TV 4K and a Sony TV , the only way to do that was to go in to the ATV4K menus and force an HDR 10 picture. I would then need to change it back to go back to watching SDR material. There was no way to disable DV on the Sony itself.

Having just installed a new Sony A80J OLED, the newer menu system on the Sony now makes it easy to "turn off" DV, thus automatically enabling HDR 10. When setting up the HDMI inputs on the Sony, you can choose from "Standard", "Enhanced", or "Enhanced Dolby Vision". If I choose "Enhanced", my Apple TV assumes the Sony isn't compatible with Dolby Vision and outputs HDR 10. Nice!

Actually on the Sony A80J, the HDMI ports 1&2 are different from the ports 3&4, and the settings differ between the two types of HDMI ports. Ports 1&2 are the older type HDMI ports and 3&4 are the new 2.1 ports. Your example must have been using either port 3 or 4, since those are the only ports that have an "enhanced (Dolby Vison)" option.

Ports 1&2 are capable of 18Gbps max, and have only two options in the settings for "standard" or "enhanced"
"enhanced" on ports 1&2 enable the 18Gpbs max for up to [email protected] 12-bit Dolby Vision 4:2:2 format. I believe "standard" just limits the port to [email protected]

Ports 3&4 are capable of the new HDMI 2.1 48Gpbs max but only if set to "enhanced" - they offer "standard" and "enhanced (Dolby Vision)" settings as well on those two ports.
If you set ports 3 or 4 to "enhanced (Dolby Vision)" this limits them to 18Gpbs max like ports 1&2, allowing for [email protected] 12bit Dolby Vision but disables [email protected] support. Selecting "enhanced" for ports 3 or 4 enables [email protected] but without Dolby Vision support.

I understand how to manipulate the hdmi ports to “disable” Dolby vision but how do you keep the google smart tv apps that are on board to not use it? I also really just want to use hdr but when I use my prime or Apple TV apps, it uses Dolby vision on capable programs and won’t let me switch to hdr. At that point I only have the option of dv light, dv dark and vivid. This is on a X85j. Any help is appreciated.

Unfortunately there is no way to disable Dolby Vision support for the internal apps.
Too bad the streaming services don't let you choose between the formats available for a title, SDR, HDR, or DV.
They always seem to force it to use the highest format that the TV supports!

Anyone figure this out? This is a giant problem. Steaming hockey on ESPN+ thru Roku Ultra the TV detects Dolby Vision, and only gives me the 3 options you mention. Except it looks like garbage and I want to stream normal not DV. Streaming hockey on ESPN+ on my garbage TCL TV looks better than my expensive Sony TV.

Turn off HDR Always On on your Roku under advanced display settings, it comes enabled by default.

Thank you. It is off however.

So I'm clear because this is somewhat confusing (still! :)). According to your explanation, LDbetaGuy is incorrect when he assumes using HDMI 1/2 will disable DV. Is that right, DV is STILL enabled even when using HDMI 1/2?

And the reason I'm asking is due to Classy's settings. If I'm going to keep DV (which I'm still debating) then I should be using Warm. If I decide to disable DV then I should be using Expert1 (pretty sure I've got that straight). So, in order to disable DV, I would do that from my streaming device (AppleTV 4K in my case).

Furthermore, Classy seems to think by setting HDMI 3/4 to 'Enhanced', that will disable DV. Who is right?? :)

Yes its confusing because Sony mode names aren't consistent.

HDMI1 and 2 in Enhanced mode supports up to [email protected] DV and they are hdmi 2.0 ports.

HDMI3 and 4 are hdmi 2.1 ports so can support up to 4k120Hz but without DV if set to Enhanced mode. So just for those ports they have available a separate Enhanced (Dolby Vision) mode to act the same as hdmi 2.0 for up to [email protected] with DV. With the newest firmware they also added for those two ports a new Enhanced VRR mode that also supports up to 4k120Hz but no DV.

This is all so complicated because the microtek chipset Sony uses has limitations it seems. In contrast some other brands that use their own custom chips like LG doesn't have the limitations and provide four hdmi 2.1 ports that can all support up to 4k120Hz with DV.

Brilliant! Thank you Mr. Brisco. (y)

HDR 10 Is far better than DV in my opinion.
