From reading countless post and from my own experience with my wife, women do not appreciate bass.

Looking at most forum posts..Guys would have to wait till the woman in their lives are not home to enjoy and/or test their home theater speakers. Some go to the extent of having separate rooms so the woman won't complain.

When I get home from work, I have about an 1.5 to 2 hour window to enjoy my music. Within that time I'm happy, I can do bass tests, turn up the volume, etc. But when I hear that key in the door, my happy spirit dies. Time to turn the volume down to "un-enjoyable" levels. I get mad and turn the thing off and go to my laptop.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE MY WIFE VERY MUCH. But the chic just cannot appreciate good bass.

married the wrong woman? my wife is more of a basshead than I am.

but compromising on the bass when your wife is around isn't the worst thing in the world.

There are a lot of factors to consider that you left out of your OP. You like bass, but is it "clean" bass that's integrated properly with the other frequencies, or is it "boomy" or "sloppy" bass? My wife has no problem with big low-end, as long as it's appropriate and not bloated in relation to everything else. If it's out of proportion, or simply loud for the sake of being loud, she's got issues (as do I).

If the bass is set up properly and implemented properly, and she still hates it, that may be more of an issue with her sense of hearing. Hearing is a sense that, just like the other senses, people can have preferences and likes/dislikes within that sense. Some people can be very sensitive to certain frequencies, and it can act like a noxious stimuli to them. Others aren't so sensitive, or are bothered by something completely different. It's not necessarily unique to women, but I haven't looked at any data recently to suggest that it might affect them at a higher rate.

My wife is more then happy to listen to the tv speakers on the 650 by itself.

There is hope, during a movie, she was watching alone, can't recall which one..she said HONEY I think this would sound better boomy......(the bass is anything but boomy IRL).

I felt like she is starting to get it..I always point out after LFE events, that see, if you didnt have the subwoofer that is something you would never hear from the tv alone, so you are not getting the directors INTENT for that scene.

Play the end of Knowing on the tv alone at low volume, vs 1000 watts of Epik and AV123 running alongside....

two diff movie endings basically...

She was kind of upset when I added the dragon actually, too many large black boxes...but I hid them skillfully, and when you are sitting on the sofa, you can't see them....nearfield left and right..

Probably all your wife is hearing of your music are the bass frequencies unless she's sitting in the same room listening with you. Low frequencies have a tendency to escape through the rest of the house out-of-proportion to higher frequencies (especially when purposefully listening to bassy material)... which may be a reason why bass is the focus of so much disdain.

I'm not a fan of heinously loud car subs driving past my house. I certainly wouldn't expect anyone to have to put up with that inside the house.

Luckily my listening room is detached from the rest of the house.
AND my wife enjoys showing off the subwoofer to friends even more than I do.

Many, many women love bass. The low rumble of poweful bass seems to do something to women in a sexual way. Every check out the number of women that attend NASCAR events? Ever been to a NASCAR event? 30,000-50,000 women excited as hell. When those cars come around the last turn and get the green flag, the bass is like nothing anybody who has not been to a true NASCAR event can ever imagine. And the women go wild. Absolutly bonkers. That low, powerful, loud, rumble drives them nuts. Sorry for being so crass but from my experience I think just the opposite. Just because a few housewives, yours among them, might not give you permission to listen to bass shouldn't be an indictment against all women.

This is one of my favorite posts, ever.

Except, unfortunately, there was a typo in my post which I didn't fix until after you quoted it. If her ovaries are vibrating in an unpleasant manor, then you need to tidy up the place. But if they are vibrating in an unpleasant manner, tie the tubes.

I just found this out the hard way, bought and installed butt kickers on the couch in the theater and the first movie we watched, Benjamin button, she said WTF is that and I knew I was in trouble, now if we watch a movie together I have to turn the butt kickers off.

You should have gotten the rabbit attachment for the butt kickers.

Seriously though, I agree with the premise that women tend to dislike bass. I have verified this with a couple of bro-in-laws and friends. Not an all-encompassing objective polling, but hey, we have heard it a LOT.

Ever notice that women never complain about bass when they are in a club looking for a guy and the bass and music are blasting away. Then they get married and complain about too much bass from the home theater.

I've been married for a loooong time and my wife gave up complaining about the bass.

I think you guys must be doing something wrong.
I was playing some demo scenes for my parents and even though my mother sat there with her ears plugged she commented that the bass actually sounded good! This is coming from the woman who would tell me to turn the bass down on my headphones
when I was a kid (well... maybe it wasn't that bad
).

I'm curious; how much boost do those of you with this female problem give to your subwoofer? I passed the mom test with +3db from Audyssey's level.

This is with a Rythmik D15SE... so +1 for Rythmik passing the mom test.

Women don't like bass is a rediculus assumption. Women don't like the fact that you like something. If you (as a guy) have something that makes you happy.....and it's not her!!!!! You've got a problem. If something (like a nice surround sound system) puts a smile on your face.....and she didn't put it there!!!!! You've got a problem. If you would rather sit and listen to a SACD track in your home theater.....instead of listenning to her!!!!! You've got a problem. Boy toys and girls don't mix any more than girl toys and boys. If you're married: Live with the pain!
