According to the marketing intern who wrote this copy:

Neural Surround

Neural Surround, a proprietary audio format that embeds the rich envelopment and discrete image detail of surround sound and is 100% compatible with stereo content. Chosen by XM Satellite Radio as the format for their 24/7 XM HD Surround programming

Pro Logic is designed to work with matrixed sound, that is 2-channels with 2 other channels magically embeded in those 2 channels.

The neural thing is not trying to extract stuff intentionally encoded into the original. It fabricates surround information.

Hello All,

Neural Surround operational theory and performance is covered in great detail at the Neural website. The value proposition of Neural Surround is the same as matrix systems, that is, to convey multichannel content over a two channel medium. The additional benefits of the Neural system are better discreteness and immunity to image instabilities.

Neural's upmixer, as available in AVR receivers, is excellent for decoding XMHD 5.1 content, matrix encoded LtRt content found in SD television and Neural encoded HD Radio broadcasts.. The Neural upmixer is also excellent for rendering stereo content in multichannel. Nothing is fabricated or destroyed.

Lets clear the air..

Neural provides audio DSP processing software of various types..

The most commonly used software is a 2-CH phase matrix enhancer, this works with either stereo or even mono source material to make it sound more spacial and less directional.. This is an open system and used exclusively in all XM channels (except the HD channels)..

The 2nd software is the Neural software is a matrix 5.1 >2.0>5.1 encode/decode surround output used in the XM HD channels. Here 5.1 discrete source material goes into the Neural encoder (5.1 > 2.0) packed into a 2-CH stream, next it is broadcasted by XM (HD channels) and when played back through an AVR that includes the Neural 5.1 decoding one will get a 5.1 soundfield..

Since the source material was encoded by XM using the Neural encoder, its output of 5.1 output channels and its sound stage is predicitible...

Relative to instrument and vocal placement as to deliver as close as possible the soundfield the original 5.1 discrete production...

There are other 2.0>5.1>2.0 matrix encode/decode systems including ones from Dolby, Logic 7.. Also these systems can be used just as an open decoder for 5.1 decoding as well...

But when the decoder is used with any 2-CH stream the delivered sonics/sound stage performance can vary quite widely as each source material has its own unique phase, level and frequency differences which then each decoder may handle and steer in a different way...

Not a perfect world...

But now at least a user can get a 5.1 sound field output from virtually any source stream, as many of the older original, recordings will never be released in a 5.1 mix..

The latest matrix systems are far superior to the original ones due to more powerful processors as well significant improvements for refining the steering logic.. We have been listening to certain 2-CH sources played through a 5.1 decoder and often one will swear even it is discrete.. However matrix systems are not perfect as their channel separation is lower than discrete systems but still can be very pleasing...
