Can Sony afford to fight the fight?

Considering Sony's financial status, do you think they can market and promote blu-ray as originally anticipated?

Without a doubt.

It's already starting. People are becoming more and more aware that the PS3 is best value to go with in terms of HD movies. Least expensive (MSRP $499) HDMI 1.3 HD movie player regardless of format. It also plays HD games (720p and 1080p native, 7.1 uncompressed audio) and SACD's. :D

You forget that the Sony loses "a crapload" for every PS3 they sell. The only thing that is going to save them is the sell through rate for software, and their attach rate for Blu-Ray right now will not support the loss they take on the system.

Be aware, that is based on the $1000 players. Who knows if that will change for the $500 PS3.

You stating that I forgot something doesn't make it reality, it isn't ;)

It's a long term plan just like with the PS2, just like MS's consoles plan for turning a profit is long term
I agree. Compared to the stand alone players, the PS3 is a HUGE value.
more ps3 they sale more they'll make in the long run. Also remember ps2 still outsells the 360 and with 100million ps2 in circulaton, sony still has a cash cow.

I just want to ask this straight up:

What do you consider Sony's financial status to be? And why wouldn't they be able to 'fight the fight?'

Are there any standalone blu-rays that at least match the specs of the ps3?
My prediction is longer term no, MS is going to cycle burry them. What I mean is the 720 will be out way before Sony even wants to consider a PS4 imo. MS is buying the market long-term, the only thing would stop them is if they lose all their extra cash and a complete stockholders revolt.
Why do HD-DVD supporters continue to create troll threads in the BD forums and why don't the mods do anything about it?

All you have to do is read the financial pages, to find out about Sony's troubles. They have been losing money for the last three years.

Here is part of an article from the ABC website on further recalls of laptop batteries, this time by Toshiba.

It's a major embarrassment for the Japanese electronics and entertainment powerhouse, which is in the midst of a major overhaul of its operations involving closures of plants and divisions and job losses.

While Sony said it was still trying to assess the extent of the damage and additional spending for the battery problem, the Japanese newspaper Asahi said that an initially estimated cost of 30 billion yen ($254.2 million) could balloon to twice as much.

Sony shares closed 0.83 percent lower at 4,780 yen ($40.51) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Friday.

Sony has made a net profit each of the last three years. This is exactly the sort of FUD and nonsense that pisses me off. People who actually don't follow finance at all, read random articles here and there, and think themselves expert based on that.

In fiscal 2006, Sony made a net profit of ~$1 billion

In fiscal 2005, Sony made a net profit of ~$1.5 billion

In fiscal 2004, Sony made a net profit of ~$850 million

...and yet here you are, stating as if it's a fact 'everyone knows,' that Sony has been losing money each of these past three years. Ask yourself, how did you come to be so wrong on this matter, and did you ever follow-up what you read in these articles with any actual research?

...And as for the battery thing, I'm thinking it will cost them well past $500 million... but as long as it stays under $900 million, well - I think they'll be making another year-end profit this year as well.

I think you answered your own question. ;)

HD DVD supporters continue to create troll threads in the BD forum because the mods don't do anything about it.
No doubt Sony has held its own over the years, but the great gains the company has made this year have been reduced as of late. How much of it is a result of the battery recall, PS3 woes or what, I don't know. But over the past month alone Sony has lost nearly 5% of it's trading value whereas the NASDAQ has experienced nearly a 5% gain. I guess as a fence sitter on the PSS as a blu-ray player, I wonder if Sony may end up focusing on the PS3 over Blu-ray, and I end up with a glorified dvd player (since I won't use it to play games).

Before I ask you any questions on this, do you consider yourself an expert in finance?
