I was "this" close to buildign a HTPC so i could PVR and use something other then MCE to play DVD to upconvert with FFDshow and then i was even closer to buying a denon or a momitsu dvd player...but now my wife decided we need to save all our money since were going to be looking for a house in about 4 months or so and need to pinch pennies to come up with a good down payment on the house...so my ? is this im stuck with my sammy for god knows how long...personally I think my old sony DVD player looks better via component then the sammy does..but when its a bright movie such as monsters inc and stuff the sammy looks amazing..its just that i just finished watching Without a Paddle, Grude, Forgotten, Sky Captain and there are so many dark places in that movie I just never got into them cause of the sammy's BTB.. I have calibrated my tv with my avia disk but just cant gett the levels too look good enough to make me happy :) Wish someone would hack the damn firmware and fix it

Have you tried the new firmware yet? See this thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=498380

The 841 as originally shipped was widely reported as having "black crush" problems much more severe than just failure to pass Blacker Than Black data properly. The reports in the thread above indicate that the new firmware reduces/eliminates that problem, although the player still, apparently, won't pass BTB data.

I continue to consider the Samsung players a gamble, but at the current, very low street price, the 841 might be an acceptable gamble for those looking for a bargain player. It is by no means the worst bargain player out there, even from name brands -- there's some crap from Toshiba, but no, I won't go there. As is usual with DVD imaging problems (from other brand players as well), there are, of course, happy owners out there who don't see what all the fuss is about. For anyone thinking of getting a new 841, make sure you upgrade the firmware and that you understand the return policy at your store just in case you don't end up in the happy camp.

As for BTB on the 841, the odds are that since it wasn't fixed in the recent firmware upgrade that specifically addressed blacks issues it is most likely due to hardware choices in the player -- i.e., no I don't expect another firmware change will fix it.

bob thanks for the info yes I am running the december firmare I think it is..the one that lets it use DVI when it gets detected I think? And no real big difference that I can tell tbh.. I know its still there just cause if I flip from COMPNENT to DVI while paused int he movie I can see the major differences.
