Can two recycled sub speakers reused as normal stereo speakers?

1374 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Knucklehead90
I have salvaged two sub drivers from a sub with a broken amp. I was wondering whether they could be reused as normal speakers (without the crossover) for my sons bedroom. They were positioned facing each other in a push pull setup and they both have two 8ohm coils equaling 16ohms each. If it is possible for them to be setup as a pair of stereo speakers what type of amplifier would be suitable?

Thank You

Not if sound quality matters. Even if the drivers can output high frequencies, they could only project those frequencies in a straight line directly in front of the driver. As the frequency increases, the driver must be smaller, or the sound becomes directional. In other words, as the wavelength gets shorter, the dimensions of the driver must decrease. If the driver is larger than the wavelength, you'll only hear those wavelengths directly in front of the driver.
I would agree. Speaker drivers have a usable range of frequencies they cover. If you have no plans to figure that out, and add as least one more, possibly two more drivers per speaker, you will probably not get great results.

There's a separate speaker forum which might be able to give you more advice.

If you like lots of bass use them.

But the best thing to do would be to locate an amp replacement and use them for what their design was intended. Or sell them with the enclosure and get real speakers.
