That is firmware etc. I have not bought a blu-ray player yet and am waiting to see what settles.

Probably won't be found at stores for a while yet -- at least a month or two.

Updating is easy though -- you can DL the update from the internet on your PC (if doing it from the PS3 is an issue) and put it on a thumb drive/cd and put it on the PS3 if needed.
updating is very very eazy i do it over a wireless connection about 15 minutes total from download to install on mines.

i just wish my a2 was like that but i keep getting "can not find server" blah both off the same cable! ive updated to 1.5 using wired with the ps3 and worked flawlessly but to 1.8 i did it wireless
The PS3 is an evolving hardware and there probably will be many updates for it so i doubt you'll ever be able to get a "complete ps3".
IMO now is the time to get a PS3, after the new firmware (1.80) yesterday it is the new Blu-ray Player king around here!

For the A2: just use the dhcp and dns options to get your connection data, then switch dhcp off and enter the dns manually. Updating works after that.
