Can you hook up an external HD to the USB on Bravia LCD to view jpgs???

Did a search and couldn't find anything on this. I have 5 gb of jpgs that I would like to view on my 40" Sony Bravia XBR1 LCD. Thought about getting an external hard drive, copying my pictures to it and hooking it up to the USB port on the tv. Then using the photo viewer to view them. Will that work?
