Can you power a passive subwoofer?

413 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  b curry
I have a Sony SA-HE70 receiver. My house came with built in speakers but the sub woofer is passive. The the SA-HE70 has a subwoofer output designed for a powered subwoofer. I currently have the subwoofer connected to the receiver conventionally but the SA-HE70 has a 100hz roll off on the non-subwoofer channels so I don't get full bass. Could I run the subwoofer output through a cheap amp dedicated to powering the subwoofer?

Thanks for your advice

Yes. Make sure you use an amp with sufficient power, subwoofers tend to be hungry.
Thanks for the quick response...what kind of wattage do you recommend?
The top dog SVS subs are passive and require a Crown, or QSC power amp that is 4000 watts bridged mono. You do need much more power than the receiver as Fred mentioned.
Look at www.partsexpress.com . They have some sub amps with cross over, inputs, etc. If your a DIY guy you could mount one of these in a box, in the wall near the sub, or maybe in the sub cabinet itself.
