Can you run 5.1 surround sound with at 7.1 receiver?

I am building a new home and am doing homework to find out what I want for a surround sound system.

One of the items I have identified is that I want a receiver that can handle 2 zones. I really only want 5 speakers and 1 sub.

All of the receivers i have found that support multiple zones are 7.1.

Can I run 5.1 with a 7.1 receiver or does anyone have any suggestions for a good 5.1 multizone receiver?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can run 5.1 from a 7.1 receiver. Connect only the front left, front right, center, surround left, and surround right speakers (and sub). Then, be sure you have a 5.1 speaker configuration selected in the receiver's setup menu.

Typically, this arrangement allows the use of the back/rear channels to be assigned to the Zone 2 system in an additional setup configuration.
