Hello,

I have been using the Canon HF200 for about a week now. I have been looking at various editing software that allows quick combining of clips without re-encoding the AVCHD. I have now selected Nero 9 (Nero Vision) which seems to do a good job.

I have now noticed that some imported AVCHD files have black frames at the end (or repeated frames depending on what program I use to check).

These files cannot be appended properly. The resulting video stutters, especially between the original clips.

Is this familiar to anyone? Is it e.g. related to the Canon camcorder, how files are imported, or the editing software?

Thanks.

All my clips have 4 missing frames at the end and audio dissapears for appr. 12 frames. This is with my freeware editing workflow (ffdshow - Avisynth - Virtualdub). I guess ffdshow can't handle the end of .MTS files properly. Clips are from Panasonic SD9 and TM300 cameras.

This is usually not a problem as I always reencode and cut the last 15 frames. You will only get into trouble during very long shots where the camera splits files at the 4 GB limit. It's interesting though, that the missing clips are in the file. With cam connected to a TV all frames and sound plays seemless over the filesplit point! So, the error is clearly within the decoder (ffdshow).

Fortunately it's possible to restore missing frames with Avisynth (MVtools module) to avoid the 0.16 sec freeze (4 frames at 25 fps). At
frames where restored at 18:03 and 47:25. Very hard to notice if you don't know exactly where to look... Was btw shot with a single unattended TM300.

When doing lossless edits by simply adding streams from clips the freeze might be harder to avoid. Would it be possible to cut at end of the clips or do partly rerenderings with fadeouts or something?

I have seen others complain about lost frames with different cams and software. Verys strange as Panasonic's own players don't suffer from this error. Maybe all the other commercial apps have stolen the same code from the freeware world (ffdshow and others)??

Thanks.

I have 12 frames missing at the end (when using Nero Vision). The bundled Canon software (ImageMixer 3) reads and appends the files just fine. Maybe there is an AVCHD compatibility issue between the editing software and camera? Also as you mention, when playing back the clips from the camera, it works just fine (no hickup between the clips).

Very interesting! We both mention 12 frames with different cams and software. The software player from Panasonic also works perfect without missed frames.

I have had thoughts of taking this up with the libavcodec (used in most freware apps to decode h264) coders but been too lazy...

It's an interesting fact though that commercial (non Canon, Pana, etc.) apps show the same behaviour. Either there is source code stealing going on or the codec is badly documentated making it impossible for third party developers to implement it properly.

Right. I can work around the problem in Nero Vision by trimming off the end of the clips (a good idea anyway in most cases). With Canon HF200, this problem does not always occur. Today, out of ~40 clips, only 2 have this problem. I wonder if it is possible to send a sample file to Nero Vision developers for investigation...
