can't calibrate brightness/contrast

I'm trying to calibrate my plasma with DVE. I've got the colors ok, but none of the gray/black bars are showing up when adjusting brightness and contrast. Only the black background and the white I. I took the brightness up to the point just before the black background starts to light up to gray. I'm hitting 65. Is this the next best option?

As far as contrast I don't know where it's suppose to be, there is a wide range from around 30-50 with not much change above 50 is slowly starts to bloom. The 60s on the contrast i know is way too high because it starts to hurt the eyes. Below 30 is begins to dim. I know the correct setting is somewhere between 30-50. So far i've settled around 35.

What is your source? Sounds like you've got some nasty clipping problems, what does the DVE ramps pattern look like?
I'm assuming my source is my dvd player since I'm using the DVE disc?

If ramp pattern means the grayscale pattern it does show all bars from white to black.
Is this a DVI/HDMI upscaling player, which one?

If so you could try the players brightness control while viewing the pluge pattern. Leave the displays brightness at stock and move the players brightness till you can see the black bars.

Oh I gotcha, no it only has component. It's a Zenith DVB312 progressive scan, just a standard player I've had a couple of years. no upconversion or anything. It doesn't have any settings for brightness.

I just tried hooking it up to my tube tv to see if i can see the bars on it but the composite inputs out of the player aren't working. I guess i need a new player.

That's what I was just going to say! I recently had a situation where my display's DVI input was perfectly calibrated using an Accupel generator, just to find out that when I connected my DVD player and then trying to adjust brightness and contrast using the display's controls, I had the same problem as you and could not adjust them properly. Then I used the player's controls and everything adjusted perfectly. Apparently the player's setting were overdriving the projector's input, so no matter what I did to adjust the projector, I was not fixing the overdriven signal coming into it.

Before you go out and buy a new player, I would at least borrow one (that has adjustable controls) from someone else to see if that is the issue you are having.

I finally found the problem. The DVD player is fine. Progressive scan was turned on and it didn't allow the black bars to display which is also why composite wasn't working.
