Hi avsforum! Haven't been here for a while, it's nice to be back

I'm having an issue with a subwoofer in a little 5.1 system I set up for my parents.

Everything has worked fine for months now but there is suddenly something wrong with the subwoofer/bass levels. The sub seems to be pumping out an insane amount of bass (Windows vibrating, walls shaking..way more that I want). Basically its putting out max bass regardless of the audio levels from the receiver/speakers. The amount of bass seems unaffected by the controls on the subwoofer or any adjustments to the receiver.

The subwoofer in question is an Energy ESW-8 ...not exactly top of the line but enough to keep my parents happy.

The only change that's been made to the system recently was swapping out an HDMI cable.

Any ideas would be great!

Like in any troubleshooting, you need to isolate the variables.
  • Swap back the original HDMI if you think that might be an issue.
  • Try different program material.
  • Play the sub by itself to make sure that's the issue, and not some double bass being sent to speakers set as "Large" and the sub.
  • Are there multiple inputs to the sub? Can you try another one?
  • Try a different receiver.
