Cant get voices just right

3041 Views 50 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  mgkdragn
Setup is:
Tsr-700 reciever
2x klipsch rp 280fa for floorstanders
Klipsch rp 450c center
Klipsch rb-75 surround back
Svs sb-13 front sub
2x 6.25 cu enclosure vbss powered by a nx3000d amp

15 ft long by 14ft wide, 8 ft tall. Small opening in the back right corner of the room that opens to the rest of the house
Concrete slab, area rug

The voices are never perfect, when i get it close sometimes theres a whistling sound from the “s” sounds and thats the most irritating thing of all!
Any suggestions?

Is it the same with different sources/movies/programs?
A picture of the front setup would be very helpful.

That looks like a very reflective room with big naked flat surfaces and hard tile floor.
Have you tried a thick rug between the center and your seating position so you wont get as much reflection from the floor?

Is it?
and
Does it help if you lean far forward away from the seating?

Try using a blu-ray disc to test audio. I have had issues with the terrible "S" sound coming from Netflix streaming content. I always try to use a downloaded movie or a disc because the streaming services will update their compression methods and codecs to give varying results over time.
Providing its not source material influenced, moving your center channel forward a bit more to make sure the tweeter isnt been compromised by the first reflection point on the stands hard surface may help. Hard to tell in the photo just how much room there is to move forward. Try and have the tweeter just a bit past the edge if you can

You need some absorption/diffusion behind the speakers.

Do you have the Klipsch Horn Tweets? Hard to tell from the pic, they can be quite 'bright'.

Tile floor will not help things either... too close to the wall, etc. Try some positioning.

I sometimes get out of synch audio from OTA TV, it's the broadcast, not your setup. If you are getting out of synch audio from other sources, then something is wrong.
So, I'm noticing that you've been posting a lot about audio issues with your theater, between this and your VBSS thread.

So I have some questions for you to consider:

  1. Do you have a MiniDSP (or some sort of DSP controller)?
  2. Do you own a laptop and a UMIK-1 or UMIK-2 (or similar/better omni-mic)?
  3. Have you downloaded Room EQ Wizard to get sweeps and see where you peaks and nulls are?

That "S" sound you hear is called sibilance and yes it's exceptionally annoying. Some of us have some crazy high resolving systems (whether built or bought) and they can quickly point out bad recordings or poor streaming compression (a very common culprit in sibilance).

Those Klipsch units can definitely be irritatingly bright. Do you have any other speakers you can run and make a comparison? It really just may be that the horns are too aggressive for your listening taste.

Room treatments may help somewhat but the 'sound' of the Klipsch will remain. That's hard so good luck. Tweeters are critical. I guess some horns do it but most concern me...
Money is a little tight right now but thank you for your suggestions. I plan on purchasing a umik and miniDSP when I have the available funds. For right now ill keep the volume a little lower.. im so damn happy with my system otherwise :)

Something you can do for free is, as people have mentioned, move things around.

Some other items to consider:
  1. When's the last time you ran an Audyssey auto-config?
  2. Have to tried going between the various configurations? Reference, Flat, Bypass L/R.
  3. Do you have $20 to burn? Go download the Audyssey app and follow this video:

Seriously, watch that video . . .then watch it again.

Just when you think you know everything . . .give it another viewing.

I see your AVR is a Yamaha . . .I think that's YPAO or something like that. Same principle, similar process, different name
Do you watch cable TV on that setup? Try a news channel or two if the sound is the same.
I find that usually they are crystal clear mostly but the way other sources are recorded are the issue for me.

Have you looked at the photo? Aside from a rug that won’t do much, the room is bare (reflective leather seats don't count). . I can almost guarantee that some bass traps behind the speakers and first reflection absorption on the side walls (and rear walls if the money doesn’t run out) will be more bang for the buck than any other upgrade other than perhaps re-doing the room EQ.
Your first problem is your echo chamber of a room. You're going to be pounding sand until you add acoustical treatments, especially around that front sound stage and first reflection point (ceiling, etc.). Start by moving those speakers at least 12" from the wall, too. Although there are better Klipsch centers than the RP-450C, it's not the real problem.
