I was looking at carpet pad myself the other day at the Depot. The heavy multi-colored felt pad-type (5/8" to 3/4") looks real tempting to me. The price is fairly cheap, plus it is readily available. Not sure about the fire-retardent qualities though.
The other alternative is to use the fiberglass drop-ceiling tiles and turn them over with the glass-side facing into the room. They will usually need to be special-ordered though, most stores don't carry them anymore.
the carpet pad is right around the same price of the ceiling tiles, then again, for a little more, you can get the JM Insulshield. I used the ceiling tiles, because I got too lazy to look for the Insulshield, and I had to finish the theater ASAP at the time. It works pretty well still. If I had to chose between CT or Carpet Pad, I'd still go with CT. If I can get JM, I'd get the JM.
