I have been tasked with converting some old cassette tapes to Digital Audio Files. I have a decent Cassette player that i was hoping I could use with my receiver (HK AVR-247) to send the audio via optical audio to my computer and record it there.

Is this doable? I have it all set up, but when I record my digital in on the computer all I get is complete silence. Is there something i need to configure on the Receiver?

I suspect your receiver, cannot output digital when analog is input. That's normal. I can't name an exception to this off the top of my head.

A simple method is to record to a WAV file using a computer. You might get a lot of noise that way. If you were getting good money for this, you could consider a better option than those on board soundcards - for example, and audio interface from M-Audio. You could then edit that wave file into MP3's if needed using free tools or something like Sound Forge.
