What is consensus on how to address the gap created between HVAC boots and registers created by double drywall and wall treatments. Say for example you rough mount a boot. This is fine for 1/2" drywall. with double 5/8" and 1" wall treatments there is a significant gap between the boot and the register. What is the best way to eliminate this gap?

You can also have a ductwork shop custom make piece for you. It would probably run you around $25 bucks. That or bend your own insert sleeve to extend the opening. Jeff's way is cheaper.

Thanks, BIG. The flashing part is what I was missing. I was going to try it with tape only and if that didn't work I was going to just build a 'skirt' for it out of mdf. The flashing should work much better. Thanks for the idea. Cathan, as many of us are, I'm well over budget at this point so I think I'll go with the cheaper route.
