Any advice appreciated:

I have a return line spanning the width of my room. I planned on using RC to decouple the ceiling. Do I need to build a soffitt around this or will the RC sufficiently decouple any vibrations. As you can see (pictures to be downloaded) the metal for the return line is flush with the joists so the RC would be in direct contact with the metal.

Welcome to the forum!

Without seeing the pics, I'd say you don't want the RC in direct contact with the return duct. Sound travels like crazy through AC returns. Do what you can to make sure nothing is in direct contact wiht the duct.

I would suggest placing some of this sound deadening material on your duct to minimize vibration noises.

It is very similar to "Dynamat" commonly used by car stereo enthusiast to stop the metal in their cars from vibrating. I placed some in part of the solid duct above my theater. Before I put it on I would tap on the duct with a broom stick and it had a very "tinnie" vibration noise to it. Now with the sound deadening material in place, when I tap on it, their's just a little "thud". It comes in roll 12" wide by whatever length at a cost of $1.60 per foot. Cheap solution that in my experience works.

There is a minimum post requirement to post pics, Also if you put it in a FREE photobucket.com account you don't have to bother with sizing. Just copy the last of the three links shown for the pic into the body of the text of your post and it will appear.
