Ceiling mount Da-Lite High Power....

I have just gone through all of my screen samples from Da-lite and Draper. I thought for sure I would be ordering the M2500 (because of all the enthusiasm here) but this is CERTAINLY NOT the screen for me. It was so bad, in my 132"x73" situation, that I figured a high gain screen was out of the question. The hotspotting and noticable wrinkles, etc, seemed to be terrible as I moved the M2500 screen sample around different areas of the screen. I tried this with the M1300 and the results were quite pleasing without as much "punch" in the reflected light (and I like the returning colors better). I have been quoted $290 for both of these which I think is a good price (material only).

A day later I received my Da-lite screen samples. I tried most of them, staying away from the high power, and still liked the m1300 the best. Then, just for kicks, I tried the High Power Da-lite and was very impressed by its ability to kick back some serious light while maintaining uniformity. I thought that it would be dim due the fact that it sends light back to the source so a ceiling mount situation is not the ideal for this screen. I must say, though, it kicked back way more light than the M1300 when I am seated on the couch and is much more pleasing than the M2500. I would guess I am getting about 1.8-2.0 gain out of it. From all of the experimentation I have done the High Power still reflex more light from all areas of the screen than the M1300 does in its best position (the center). The m2500 would appear very dark when placed towards the edges of the screen location.

So my questions are these: Is there any other disadvantages of going with the Da-lite High Power considering my application (ceiling mount with large screen and 15-17ft seating distance)? Will it be alot more expensive? Is it ok to assume I will I get better contrast out of the High Power than the m1300? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Hi Jeff-

I have the HP in 120" 4x3 with a ceiling-mounted CRT. I have gone through several screens and this is the best so far with my setup. I do have a low ceiling and plan on raising the couch a few inches. I don't recommend this setup if the eye/screen/projector angle is more than about 18 degrees. If you can stay within that go for it.

If you ever get over to this side of the state stop in if you want to see it on a full screen. I live in Muskegon.

Jeff: I recall you are using a UP1100? I went through the same process over a year ago and also settled on the High Power. I am using a UP1100 in a ceiling mount-- the projector is about 7.5 ft off the floor. The screen is about 18' ft. away oriented near the ceiling in a Cosmopolitan Electrol case. screen is 119" diag in their hdtv (ie, 16x9) format.

There is very little light drop off when seated on our sofa. Because I am recommending the screen to a friend with a higher ceiling and, therefore, a greater viewing angle, we checked the light dropoff by viewing my screen while laying on the floor-- even at this angle the image still held up. I distinctly prefer the color presentation over a Stewart 1.3 that I was also considering. I spent some time with the Greyhawk screen at CES; although it improves blacks, it do so by sacrificing just about everything else-- so it will be a matter of personal preference and viewing habits-- I am gonna stick with the high power for now. perhaps the gamma mod to the up 1100 will help the blacks a bit.

there is very little downside with the screen and it is VERY convenient-- easy to clean, it does not wrinkle (a big problem with many other materials) and doesn't need tensioning.

I would definitely go the same route again but I would order the screen with wider black borders to help with the light spill/halo.

JXO,

That sounds great. I think I have settled on that one being the best for my UP-1100 as well. The problem is, I have not found a decent price for this material. For the size I want, I can get a M1300 Draper (my second choice for performance) for $201. The best price I got on the High Power so far is $850, a bit more than I wish to spend right now. Any suggestions?

I paid around $800 for mine--cosmopolitan electrol. bought from Polivision in PA-- ask for Ralph. your choice of case will have alot to do with the cost-- more so than the screen material. See
