Good Evening All


I'm at the point where I would like to pull the trigger on a projector. After doing some research, I find that my ceiling may be too low. The drop ceiling that is in place now is 7'1". There are too many wires and plumbing beneath the joist to move, therefore drop ceiling.


What projectors will give more of a range of forgiveness for this positioning? Is there a minimum height that should be kept for a projector and anything less then becomes table top?


I have been looking at the HD1000. I would like to stay with DLP. I have total control over lighting, so I don't need a light canon.

Most of the projector manufacture web pages list the drop information. Its also on projector centrals web page I believe.


You will find something to work with your 7'1 height and worst case is you tilt the image a little and then straighten it with the keystone adjustment in the projector. Doing such is not the recommended method though, there is some loss in picture quality when using keystone adjustment but many will also tell you that you will never see it.


My basement ceiling is 6'4 and my screen is 6'x8' and I used no keystone. That's a pretty extreme setup but there are projectors that will work. Below is a picture of my setup.

I have 8 foot ceilings. However, in mounting my projector, I had to get a 1 foot extension pole. So the bottom of my projector is at 6 feet off the ground. Without the extension pole, it was closer to about 7'2" off the ground.


Mine is an LCD projector (panasonic ax100).


So yeah, 7 foot ceilings aren't ideal, but they are obviously workable. The biggest problem with a low ceiling is trying to add a high riser. My riser is almost 13" tall and I would have problems with a 7 foot ceiling, but you'll find a projector that will work.

The main reason I brought this up was the review of the Optoma HD72 I read. The reviewer make a statement to the effect that due to the Optoma offset, without the lens shift option, the HD72 was not the best option if you don't have some wiggle room.


I guess the question is, what are some good 720P projectors that will give me the "wiggle room" that I may need? Is the HD1000U a good choice? I have been reading several good things about this projector.

Take a look at the specs on the Sharp DT-500 and read thru that thread. its a lower offset DLP that is getting great reviews.

I use the panny 900au PJ on my low basement ceiling. Very flexible. I Usually watch it with a width of about 10'. I am very happy with it
