I'm at the ceiling stage of my theater build.

I'm doing a black ceiling....I found USG tiles at a good price $.60 per sq foot, but am struggling with the Ceilingmax at $1.40 per sq foot (in 100 foot kits from Lowes). I need 440 sq feet, so I'm at $700 in the grid alone. I'm getting past the point of saving $ vs convenience. The ceiling link calculator says it'll be $280. That's a huge difference (2.5x). For that price, I think I have to paint. Am I missing any options?

Did anyone find satin black ceilingmax anywhere cheaper?

Thanks

Scott (about to have black fingers from a spray paint can)

well you are best not to have a drop ceiling but have a drywall one. Did you do other soundproofing in your theater?

Just know it is NOT easy to paint acoustic tiles even with spray paint. You can buy black acoustic tile special order

Thanks for your reply McCall.

I'm doing a dropped ceiling. I want the access, I don't need it...I want it. The issue has been debated over and over. I'm not worried about soundproofing.

I already have the black ceiling tiles (at a good price), I'm just bothered by the grid pricing. There are two products that do surface mount. They are Ceilinglink (white only) and Ceilingmax (colors available). There is a large price differential.

I'm looking for:

*it was worth the $ premium to not have to paint

*painting wasn't that bad

*I'd never paint my grids again because.....

*other suggestions/comments

Thanks

As a follow-up to a voicemail I left at CeilingLink, I got a call from Doug (at CeilingLink). He told me that he will have their product available in black soon. He expects the bottom track to be available in 2-3 weeks and the edge rails in about 6 weeks. He's still working on pricing for these components, but he expects just a small upcharge per piece. He doesn't plan to only sell the black product in lots of 100sq feet.

Thanks Doug, I'm sure a lot of people are looking forward to this product's availability.

I just finished installing my drop ceiling using the CeilingLink system. It worked great, its very forgiving of minor placement errors and uneven joists. I would highly recommend it. It took me about 4 hours to do a 14x20 room by myself including cutting and installing the acoustic panels. Having someone else to lend a hand would probably have cut the time at least in half as the 8ft sections were tough to handle by myself.
