center channel placement

All,

In my living room, I have a 30" widsecreen Samsung slimfit (not plasma) tv. I am going to be attaching a Sanus tv top shelf to support either a cable box or center channel. My question is, what should I put up there? The center and/or cable box can go below the TV. If I put the center up high, it is above ear leval. If I put it down low, I can angle it up a bit, but its sorta blocked by a coffee table and it would be about knee level.

I am leaning toward going low because for two reasons:

1) the center is heavy (~25lbs I think) so putting it lower is safer and more stable

2) I can aim my remote directly at the cable box up high and not have a coffee table in the way

Ultimately I will go with whatever seems to work best acoustically. What is the best center channel speaker position.

Anyone have any input/suggestions?

Thanks.

The best acoustic placement is the one that sounds the best to you. If you are concerned about stability and have children you might want to put the center speaker below TV.

You could try attaching something stiff to the TV and/or speaker to the wall to have better stability, but that might not look so nice.

I agree with this advice. With a RPTV, the best place (usually) is above the TV. If you place it below the TV, you usually get more interaction between the speaker and the floor, which can cause comb filtering and bass reinforcement, (not *always* a good thing). Also, if it's in a cabinet, that can cause other acoustic anomalies; early reflections, vibrations, echo's. If the CC is ported and the port is on the rear, you definitely *don't* want it inside a cabinet.

I have a new Sammy Slimfit as well (the hlt5076s to be precise). I am just now realizing how difficult this is. My CC is a Polk cs400i (it's a monster!). Mounting with a shelf up top is a problem for bowing the screen and my current stand doesnt have the clearance for positioning the CC below, and centered with, the TV.

I would anchor a shelf into the wall... however, the walls are plaster and I'm not sure if this is safe. Has anyone done this?

Also, if I must buy a new stand... can anyone recomend something that comes in a variety of styles (classic and contemporary), but is also less than $300? It'd be nice if it was high enough for the CC to have clearance over the coffee table too

cheers for my first post!

I had a similar issue when I purchased my Klipsch RC-62, the speaker weighs 30 lbs, and I had no where to put it. I ended up buying about $50 worth of wood, steel brackets, and woods screws, and built a hutch to fit over my current TV stand. I'd post a picture but Im currently at work.

Either way, my suggestion would be to build a shelf or a support that fits either just behind or around your current TV.
