My parents have a pair of Onkyo bookshelf SKB-550 speakers. Then they are trying to use their TV speakers as a center channel. Of course it does not work that well to use the TV speakers for this purpose so they would like to get a dedicated center channel. I found by looking online that the matching center for those bookshelfs is the SKC-550. I can't find that anywhere. But I can find the SKC-750 on Ebay. Should I just tell them to get that speaker? Or should I look for a newer speaker? How do I find one that will match the sound? I should stick with the same brand, correct? I found a manual for that Onkyo system here: http://www.intl.onkyo.com/downloads/manuals/pdf/ht-sr800_manual_e.pdf

Page 70 has specs on the speakers. What would you all recommend?

Thanks

Mike

I guess your parents have the HTR-550 AV receiver connected to the current speakers?

How much space do they have for a dedicated center channel?

The SKB-550 speakers are actually the surround speakers from that system and have a single 3.25" driver in each speaker. They're really not that good but better than TV speakers. The SKC-550 has dual 5" drivers and a 1" tweeter. I assume the SKC-750 center has a similar configuration.

They should be fine with the SKC-750 center unless you want to upgrade all 3 speakers.

I have upgraded their AVR because the cheap 2 channel Sony that the builders set them up with wasn't cutting it. They now have a Pioneer VSX-1023 powering the speakers. And upgrading the rest of the speakers is not an option. They are no where near audiophiles. Space is not a concern as it will sit on top of the entertainment stand.

Thanks

Go through the settings and make sure the center channel is set to NO or turned off. That way the receiver will send dialogue to the front left and right speakers.

But as afrogt said the SKC-750 center would work in your situation.
