I was thinking of a lepai amp along withe the Sony ss-cn5000 center speaker, would this work? I suppose you would lose stereo.

Yes stereo would be lost and you would need some way to sum the stereo channels or else you will be listening to only one channel. Does not seem worth it. Are you 'thinking' this because you already possess these items? Go for it if it really costs you nothing. if you have the items, set the iPOD to MONO (if it has that capability), if you dont have the items, go for powered PC speakers or the lepai with some smaller bookshelve speakers from Craigslist.
