center speaker on top of sub

608 Views 14 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  clrv
I'm in the design stages of my first FP system and I would like to check if there is any problem with me sitting my center speaker (Athena AS-C1) on top of my 12" AR subwoofer - the sub will be right under the DIY screen. Is this a doable setup and not violating any "rules" of speaker placement?

The center-line of the room, while the obvious spot for the center speaker, is usually not the best place for the sub. You will generate some serious bass peaks and dips there...

Thanks, I guess I'll have to rig me up a center speaker stand.
I have my center on top of my sub and I have enjoyed the sound just fine. I started out with the center above the screen, but it was too high in comparsion to my mains and my ears. Here's a PIC with the center above the screen. I've moved in down on top of the sub.
Dali speakers designed their Euphonia system so that the center can set on the sub. Check their website and look under the Euphonias and there is a good picture.

I've seen extremely good systems with subwoofers beneath the center channel. As for subwoofer placement, no spot is perfect. Even if you were to suspend the subwoofer in the dead center of the room, it would still excite 1/8 of the room modes (as opposed to all of them for corner placement).

Terry
I dragged my sub all around the room to find the best location, and it ended up being right under the C speaker. The sub sits on the floor, while the C speaker is on a shelf 1" above, so the physical vibration of the sub cannot influence the C's midrange/tweeter.
I have my sub located directly between the front mains in one of my systems and it sounds great. Try it, see how it sounds in your environment.

I agree I did the exact same thing and have found that the center is the best place for my set up(see pics). www.thelewispage.com

Nice pics. What is the curvy table for (in the lower right picture)? Kind of looks like a ticket counter... :)
Thanks, it is not a very good pic but it will be a concession area and a place to set and eat or whatever. Still in the planning and playing stage
Thanks, I really need to get my theater seats though.
