Guys,

Hopefully, I can get a quick answer. I have an HVAC crew in my basement at this very moment. They are using a fiberglass product by CertainTeed. It is approx 1" thick fiberglass with foil on one side. It comes in rigid sheets instead of a roll like insul-shield. I asked if I could buy this from them and the said yes. I don't how much but is this similar to OC 703 or any of the other fiberglass that can be used for acoustic treatment? I think this is the stuff except http://www.certainteed.com/CertainTe...ct+Board.htmit has a foil backing on one side:

Correction! It's this stuff that they are using:

Thanks!

OK, here's more info. It comes in 10x4 sheets. They'll sell it for $20 and deliver it to me today. I need 10 sheets.

You can look for absorption data, but if it's a dense fiberglass 1" thick, and you can get it delivered, I'd say jump on it :)

The absorption coefficients look close enough. But I don't think you want the foil backing. Make sure it will peel off easily before they deliver it.

$20 for all of it delivered? Sounds like a really good price. Just make sure it is the right stuff.

The foil backing is what is referred to as FSK I believe. This is desirable if you are using it for bass absorbtion and should be used with the foil facing the room. This allows for mid/highs to be reflected where more broadband absorbtion is not desirable.

The foil is only on one side. This should work if I place the foil toward the wall, correct? Also the price was $20/ 4x10 sheet, not $20 for all of it. My total is $200 for 400 sq-ft delivered.

Foil toward the wall should be fine. $20 per sheet sounds normal. I was thinking you got an incredible price that was sounding too good to be true. You could have probably found a better price, but probably not delivered.

Yes. For high frequency absorbtion, you can use it foil on with foil away from the room. For bass only (strange curve too) face foil to the room and space out from the wall. For upper bass through highs, remove the foil and space it out from the wall a couple inches.

Sounds like you got quite the deal. Have fun!

I just looked at a similar duct board from Johns Manville: 1" Micro-Aire type 475. Its acoustic properties were very similar to 1" 705. bpape and others said it wouldn't work as well as 2" 703 for side-wall absorption panels because the denser fiberglass would tend to reflect sound waves hitting at a sharp angle, like those coming from the main speakers.

But if you're buying 10 sheets, you must be coating the inside of your HT. Or you've got a gigantic HT, one of the two. That's the equivalent of 50 2x4 sheets! So maybe the oblique reflections won't be an issue for you.

It looks like a great price to me. The Johns Manville stuff was $36 per 4x10 board, and I had to pick it up. You're only paying about $4 per 2x4 sheet for something that's pretty similar to 1" 705. If the JM stuff was that cheap, I would have gotten it even if it wasn't ideal for sidewall panels.

Thanks guys,

I am going to cover the front wall floor to ceiling and out approx 3-ft on the side walls floor to ceiling. The rest of the room will have coverage from the floor up to 48". The finished room will probably be about 27' long by 14-15' wide with an 8' drywall ceiling.

I'm just glad I was paying attention yesterday when I walked down to check on the HVAC installation. I saw that stuff and immediately realized that I had possibly solved one problem. They tried to deliver the panels yesterday, but it was raining too hard to get them out. My wife told me that they delivered them this morning.
