Just picked up a Cerwin Vega VE-28s for free (score!) the previous owner said it was "acting funny"

Hooked it up to a spare receiver and gave it a listen. There's some very noticeable distortion in the sub.
Then without warning after 5 minutes or so the distortions gone and the bass is crystal clear.

I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to audio equipment but I can handle basic soldering and feel like this is something definitely within my reach to fix. I pulled the amp out to look for any obviously blown caps or burnt parts but didn't see anything.

So my question is what could cause distortion that would pop in and out on a powered subwoofer and where should I start looking for problems?

Also don't suppose anyone knows where I could grab a schematic for this sub?
