Chaintech AV-710 Question

333 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Jesse S
i am attempting to set up my STB to connect to my Hauppauge 500MCE via S-Video, and use the audio out from my STB to connect to my Chaintech AV-710. i have an RCA to Line-In cable to complete the connection. the trouble is that when i connect it to the "Line In" on the Chaintech, i get no sound. i open the VIA settings and can see the sound bars moving up and down, so i know that it is receiving the signal. i am using the SPDIF out via an Optical cable to my Yamaha receiver.

if i connect the audio out from my STB to my Hauppauge, i get sound, but there is a loud whining noise (even though i'm using Monster Cables). i know there has to be a simple fix. i'm just missing something.

the reason i'm even attempting this is because the STB does not output Dolby Digital through the COAX to my Hauppauge (unless i'm missing a setting there, too). i would like to get my movie channels in Dolby Digital.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If I understand you correctly: you are attempting to take the STEREO audio signal from your STB, feed it into your PC and then send if via optical SPDIF to your receiver in the hopes that when your receiver gets the signal, it will be a Dolby Digital signal?

Sorry, but that is not possible. You are feeding the computer a STEREO signal, so the computer will send your receiver a STEREO signal.

The only thing that you will achieve with such a setup is to change the medium by which the signal is transported. The contents of the signal will remain to be STEREO.

The only way for this to work (halfway) would be for you to process the STEREO signal with some software. However, doing that takes time (say 1 or 2 seconds). So, your audio would lag whatever video you are watching... I am sure this would be unacceptable so that is why I say it works halfway. I guess you could also feed the video into the PC and delay it (somehow). But you know what, this option is not worth the trouble... Just get an STB that works. :)

i thought that the STB would send a Dolby signal to the HTPC, which in turn would send to the receiver. i suppose the only way to send the Dolby signal to the receiver would be via a direct connection from the STB, bypassing the HTPC?
If your STB can send a Dolby digital signal to the HTPC, then why not just send that signal directly to your receiver?

I'm not sure what you would gain (versus going directly to receiver) - but assuming your equipment is digital optical, my MadDog Entertainer 7.1 has a selection to pass the digital input directly to the digital output.

I suppose the hookup would be there for times when you would want HTPC input versus bypass.

Check in the Recording tab and set it to use line-in. If it's set to mic or another you won't hear anything. Also up the levels for all of the inputs/outputs.
