Changing source on record, is this normal?

148 Views 10 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  TWPaulus
I'm not exactly sure as to the conditions as to why this happes, but here is the problem and my guess.

I only have one program set up to record every week, the X-Files. It's broadcast locally on channel 2 which is 994 (?) on the DTV channel. I have the showstopper to have dss on input 2 S-Video from the DSS box. And antenna set up for the antenna. (Note, two different sources for the same channel)

So the showstopper is set to record the X-Files on 994 at 9 Sunday for 1 hour, keep 2 episodes, and every show, guarenteed. Somehow the recording I have set up changes over to the air broadcast from the DSS input. I'm guessing this has to do with reconfiguring the inputs. That's the only thing I can imagine. It just seems to find the first match and the air broadcast on 2 would be first.

Is that why the input switch happens? If so can it be different, because I have to do the reconfigure input stuff when I have a problem with the box and connecting to the listing server. That's the only way I've been able to get updated listings...

Thanks

If they are really the same channel, can you just remove the OTA channel from your channel list? Or am I missing the point somehow?

I thought I had removed it. I even thought about removing the antenna input, but I needed to keep it around for OFA sports shown on other channels. I'll double check that the OTA 2 is gone tonight.

Just my two cents. Yes this is normal behavior if you have two channels with the same schedule or call signs. Just disable the OFA channel 2 or nayother that are dupicates of what's on the satalite. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

I checked last night and here's what I have. DSS channels 992-996 enabled. Channels 2-10 off the air disabled. Now, I'm not sure when I disabled these channels, it may of been after the first replay channel swap, or it may of been after the second time the replay swapped my channels.

Last night I tried this test... Set up Futurerama to record on Sundays at 8 on 992. I then mucked with the input settings, not much, but did look around there. That caused me to download a new schedule. Well, everything worked fine. Next chance I'll try to enable channel 2 OTA and see if the problem shows it's head again.

My problem is this... If I've set up the replay to record channel 992 at 9 on Sunday, WHY would it change that ever? I never have seen my VCR try to do this. I don't think it's right, unless there is some good reason for this "Feature"

Your post is realy confusing me. Sorry if I am not getting what you are saying. First off do yoy have a directv plus receiver? You talk about 2 -10 OTA are you realy talking about OFF the air signal or cable or are you talking about 2-10 coming from the receiver as remapped channel of you local channels?

The software is designed to find what you schedule to record if the channel happens to move after you schedule it by starting at the lowest channel and recording the first show it finds on that channel. That is why if you have dupicate channels like KTVU on 2 and on 992 it will always record off 2. The only way around this is to disable channel 2. Nonmaly any channel be low 100 (unles you have a plus receiver) is off a OTA or cable and anything over 100 is satalite and normaly satalite is always better video quality. There is no reason to have both dupicate channel enabled anyway, they are the same schedule. You have to deside which one you want to record and if it is the satalite you will have to disable the dupicates on the lower channels. On my cable not only are the local dupicated but half of the otherr channel are dupicate of other directv channel as they are using a Sony dss system for most of the channels on the cable and I have to disable all of the lower channels in orderr to get all my recording off satalite since it is a lot better video quality than cable.

I hope this answer your question. If you have more question it would help if you gave more info like what are you sourse, what type of directv reciver you have, etc.

Just to point out another problem you will come across with the way replaytv software picks the lowest channel. When replaytv add a channel (mostly directv as cable don't do it as offten) they are added enabled. Since directv has been adding local to the lineup (I think the are almost done by now) and since we have our local in the 99x which is almost the end of the lineup almost all of the channel that they add will be lower than ours and will try to record off those channels instead of the one of outs. I have suggested to replaytv that they sould disable the channel when the add them which would solve this problem. But for now you will have to go thru the lineup ofter and disable them yourself for if you don't catch them before you will lose that recording since it will try to record a channel you don't get. Like I said I think they are almost done but it still happens now and again. Just keep a eye on the guide as you page thru to see if there are any strange channels and go thru the channel list eveyonce and awhile. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

The 2-10 are OFA via my antenna via the antenna input. The channels I want are the directv feeds of the same channels broadcast on 992-996 on my sony BS-2 dss receiver. The channels are not mapped down low on my sony dss box, (just a note, the are remapped on my hughes box, but that's connected to my tivo)

I talked to the folks about this at ReplayTV tech support. And they stated what you did about the search from the beginning on the channel name. ie if my channel 2 KTVU was at spot 2 (KTVU off the air) and 992 (KTVU directv) the OTA channel would be found first.

It makes sense, but now, I need to confirm that it doesn't search on the removed channels.

Thanks for the help guys!
No replaytv does not search a disable channel. If it is disabled it won't be recorded by any means. Not for themes/zones or show based recording. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

I had a similar problem when I tried to hook up

my cable-from-the-wall to the RF input and my

cable-from-the-digital-box to Line 2.

Even though the channel guide showed the correct

channels for each of the inputs, the system ONLY

recorded from line 2 -- even when I specifically

told it to go to an RF channel.

Tech support told me that when there were identical

channels on two or more inputs, that the unit

defaulted to the highest input, which was Line 2

over the RF input. Hence I was unable to record

from the RF input.

One of the ReplayGuys said that this was supposed to

be fixed in the 2.1 update -- but got leftout, and would

be included in the fall software release.

You seem to have the opposite problem -- but maybe

it is caused by something similar?

Good Luck

Thanks guys.

I was just changing the inputs becuase I was trying out different setups.

I had my line one and two setup as DSS, which it was only coming in on one. I then was experimenting with hook DSS into input one, and dvd into input 2. Just messing around with the settings. ;-)

Sometimes you need to move things around, that was the only reason for the latest change.

Another reason I've done it is because that's the only way I know to force the box to download a new schedule after several days of server errors.

Just my two cents. There are two problems that I think are confusing everybody.

First problem is if you have two sourse that are different but have dupicate channel in both. example cable on RF and direct tv on Video2. Replaytv will record the lowest channel if both are enabled. Normaly this would be the cable on the rf input. If you want to record the directv channel disable the lower channel on the rf input.

Second problem is if you select the same sourse on two inputs. Example if you select the same cable company for RF input and the video2 inputs, Replaytv will select the video 2 input even if you select a channel from the rf input lineup for recording. This problem may or may not affect you depending on what the two sourse are. If replaytv see them as the same it wwill cause you above problem but if they are different then it will work. I know for I have RF set up as my cable company, video 1 to another cable company lineup and video 2 as directv and It works. Of course I have to disable all the dupicate channels. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif
