Dell routinely has screaming deals on its lower-end desktops, which look like they'd be ideal for a music-only situation (which is what I'm considering). One thing I'm concerned about though is the fan noise. Does anyone have experience with the recent Dimension desktops and whether they're quiet or noisy? I'm looking at the Dimension 3000 and 4700 in particular.

Yes those will work, i'd pass on the 3000 and go after a Power edge server SC420. The 3000 has limited video upgrade paths. With the 420sc a few simple additions and you have also have a great htpc as well. Although the PE is in a clam mini tower and can be had for under $300 many times a month with a P4 2.8, 800fsb sata drive, imo
