Say you have a 2X4 switcher like a Mono Price one. You are watching a BD movie on display 1. Later display 2 switches to the same thing. Will display 1 go blank while display 2 does the "hand-shake EDID thing" or will display one stay active?

I'm not certain about a matrix switch per say... I assume this is one of the things that Crestron DM handles so well so I haven't really dealt with lower grade switchers. But recently I did a job where they had an integra or Onkyo (same difference) receiver that had 2 HDMI outputs and whenever you switched one TV to the same source as the other TV the original TV that was watching did flicker a bit.

It's dependent on how the switch handles DHCP and how that devices are looking at it. It might work now as well, but change a TV out and it may not work. Tricky stuff sometimes.

Gefen has an 8x8 matrix coming out soon that looks promising:

I can speak to the Monoprice unit as I had their 4x2 for a (short) while... it indeed blanked the screen on both displays whenever a source changed. One of the reasons I wouldn't recommend going the cheapo route!

Yikes, 4K to save a couple of seconds off the switching time is a bit much to swallow.

I might just have to deal with it.

Realize that the delay for a couple of seconds or the blanking out of a screen are the minor possible problems. Some cheap switches will only allow for one device to go to one display. In other words, on Super Bowl Sunday you better have a box for each TV... kind of defeats the purpose.

Yup - you get what you pay for... I ended up with an Octava 4x4 CAT5 matrix for around $1000 (they also have a non CAT5 one for $500 you can use with your own baluns if you choose that route). No real problems with it so far.
