Cheap wifi encoder/decoder box?

I have seen some interesting hardware showing up lately. Pinnacle for instance has a box that uses the Wifi G network, and can decode files from a pc on the network. What I am wondering, is whether there is also any boxes that can ENCODE files, and make them available as streams on the local network?


I.e. I want to have a satellite receiver in the basement, a box next to it that encodes it to mpeg2, and works as a streaming server. I'd like another box that can decode it, upstairs. (I have three floors and no easy way of pulling cables, etc.)


It would also be good if it can transmit remote control signals, or somehow through a menu system control the satellite receiver, so I can switch channels..
