SO for xmas I ran out of time and got him the Insignia ns-updvd which is their up converting player for ~$60.

Thing is that every time you press the on button it defaults to 1080P upconvert, which it cannot handle so it gets flashes and what not in the picture.

So I am looking for a upconverting dvd player for my dad for ~60 to replace this one as I will return it as this is unacceptable.

I know i know its a crappy dvd player and a low price point but to be honest my dad cant tell the difference and is happy that his dvds even play. Dosent have to be good, have fast load times, just play dvds and upconvert to 1080i without freaking out, and support burnt dvds/cds. needs hdmi out.

any suggestions? used is alright as long as i can find it somewhere.

Thanks for the help, I looked around a bit but everywhere the price point seems a bit higher then what im lookin for.

Yesterday I purchased a Sony DVP-NS700H as a replacement for a dead panasonic standard def dvd player for my home office. It is going into a Samsung 32 inch LCD and the picture quality seems quite good. It does have the ability to lock the upconvert resolution to either 1080I or 720P which seems to be what you are looking for. I bought it at Walmart. Online the price shown was $7.00 less than what they had at the store but you could have it shipped to the store for free at that price I'm sure. The price range seems to be what you are looking for and overall the reviews are pretty good for a sub $100 upconverting DVD player. I've only watched one movie but am pretty happy with the quality so far.

I bought my 700 on sale for $69 (normally $79) and it does everything I ask of it. I used to buy $30 DVD players but for a little more it's not worth the hassle, IMO. I've never had a Sony crap out on me and I've been using them heavy for 3 years. Before that I went through many odd brands with poor results. If he didn't need the upconvert Sonys start below $40 on sale.
