Chicken Little DD Track vs. Uncompressed 5.1 Track

927 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  eddy_winds
with my current setup i am only able to enjoy DD and so i was wondering how the DD track on movies like Chicken Little and Black Hawk Down are?

I know their uncompressed tracks get rave reveiws here but does that mean that their DD tracks are great for DD quality?

Also, with my current setup of an Outlaw 970 and 7075 amp with Aperion 5.1 HT speakers, am i giong to notice a big difference between PCM Audio and DD once i upgrade my Outlaw 970 or do i need an even higher end system to hear the difference between DD and PCM Audio?

Most DD tracks on blu-ray are the full 640kb/s bit rate, and sound as good as DD can sound. You don't need a high end system to hear the difference between DD and PCM. The difference is night and day.
But just because a movie has a great PCM track is it safe to assume the DD track is also great or as great as DD can be?

Not necessarily. Check out this comparsion on the "Revenge" Blu-ray's soundtracks:

'Revenge' features an amateurish Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track (640kbps) and a truly wonderful uncompressed PCM 5.1 mix (4.6 Mbps). I've never reviewed a disc with two tracks that were so startlingly different -- dialogue on the Dolby track sounds terribly hollow, treble ranges ring and echo in some instances, and explosions and gunfire sound like bottle rockets and cap guns. On the flipside, the PCM track was richer, fuller, and defined sound effects much more clearly in its well prioritized soundfield. If I were grading the two mixes separately, it would be a full two star difference.

Most of the time the DD 5.1 track is pretty damn good. Hell even Casino Royales 448kbps DD track sounded quite good. M,I:3 sounded quite good too!

As for "Revenge":

The PCM track, on Revenge is very...very good. I am amazed this movie has held up this well...this long. It's from like 1990. The opening scene with Costner flying the jet has an incredible depth and rumble to it. My windows where dancing! All in all Revenge is a top notch flick, with a great cast, good story and a near perfect encode save a few brief scenes that are overly grainy due to Low lighting.
