Originally posted by bgall I agree with the soap op statement. How come Y&R is still the only one in HD for this long a time. All the others are filmed so it shouldn't be that hard to switch, get 'r done! |
Originally posted by Rutgar I wish it was as simple as that. But it's impossible for a channel to survive long term, if it tries to be all things to all people. HD-Net needs to decide what kind of channel it's going to be, and stick to it. When HD was a novilty, they could get away with eratic programming. But as more and more HD channels come on line, people aren't going to tune in just for the "HD-WOW" factor alone. I think Universal HD channel is suffering from the same "identity crises" problem as well, but at least Discovery HD is fairly consistant (now if they would just quit with the endless repeats, and come up with more material). If there isn't enough "kids" programming in HD, then Disney, Nickolodeon, or whomever, need to convert to HD. I'd like to see more Sci-Fi in HD, since I think Science Fiction absolutely just screams "High Definition"! But, I'm not going to insist that HD-Net show more Sci-Fi. Instead, I think the SciFi channel should get off of thier duffs and make the switch to HD. |
and Sci-Fi is for people who think they're watching Sci-Fi. |
Originally posted by NetworkTV Soaps are shot on video, not film, using a multiple camera and control room setup. Therefore that "easy" switch would require replacement of the cameras and most of the control room equipment. In addition, Y&R is one of the few shows that has sets that actually look good in HD or the budget to make the switch. I would expect ABC's General Hospital to be the next up for HD. Bold and the Beautiful might make the jump only because it is also shot in CBS's Television City studios along with Y&R. CBS's New York based soaps (Guiding Light and As the World Turns) probably won't switch for a while - those facilities on 5th Avenue are quite old. I can't even guess what NBC's plans are. |
