My brand new 507w has a small faint circle about half the size of a dime on the top right of the screen. It appears to be behind the screen and is only visible when the set is on and in very dark scenes. Samsung tells me that it is possible that the main chip may need to be replaced. I have a service call scheduled.

Does anyone know what's involved in doing this? Does the chip get replaced on it's own or does everything else (color wheel, lamp, circuit board?) get replaced too. I'm cringing thinking about how much could go wrong here, especially if I get a weak tech. I'd hate to exchange the unit for another through the retailer as after some initial PQ issues, I am now very satisfied. Also the set has no other apparent issues and is quiet!

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated, I'm hoping to get educated enough to make sure the tech is doing the right thing.

Thanks

My guess: they will replace the a card or the entire light engine. It will probably be the latter. Good luck making sure the tech is doing the right thing.

They will replace the light engine. I've had mine replaced. It does not change any service menu settings and the set should not need any mechanical re-alignment if the service tech knows what he's doing.

On my first 5065w I had a similar circle about 2" in diameter in the lower right corner of the screen. I returned the set for a new one and don't see anything like it now. I couldn't get anything out of Samsung tech support other than "there must be something wrong with your set". I have no idea what that anomaly was, but it sounds like you have the same thing.

Good luck with getting it fixed.

It sounds like you have a similar problem as I had. It is a known tech issue (my service tech showed me a printout from the Samsung tech site about it). It is a light engine quality control problem. It could be dirt or fingerprints on the lens causing the greenish circles to appear. Actually, they replaced the engine on my first set and the smudges re-appeared in a different location so they replaced the whole set with a new one (newer model, too). Now my set has a dead pixel so they are replacing the engine AGAIN. The engine is a screw in assembly consisting of the lamp, DMD chip, lens and color wheel in a single unit. It took my tech less than an hour to replace. Pretty much plug and play or maybe in this case plug and pray that there isn't something else wrong with the set.
