I recently bought an ATI AIW128Pro (Rage Theater chip) for my HTPC and have nothing but trouble with it.

The tv picture and captured video is very good but I can't seem to get proper sound. Using the newer Directshow drivers, the sound gets choppy (one second it' there, then off for half a second, then on again, etc.) when I start to record (does not matter which capture application, MMC, iu_vcr, ShowShifter...). It stays that way until I reboot, which is pretty unacceptable.

With the older drivers (up to 6292 for WinME/98), the sound is okay but capture resolution is limited to 240 lines.

The problem is not with the sound card, I verified that the AIW does not output good sound on neither the external line-out nor the internal connector. I also tested the card in two mainboards, one BX chipset and one VIA KT133 chipset. OS used include WinME, Win98SE and WinXP with the latest drivers (and older ATI drivers), DirectX and the DX digital video update.

The fact that it works okay with older drivers leads me to the assumption that it's not a hardware-based problem but rather software-/driver-related.

Any ideas on what could cause this?

Also, I'm not alone with these issues, the forums at http://www.rage3d.com and http://www.rageunderground.com showed some messages with problems identical to mine but sadly no solutions.
