Just got off the phone with Pionneer Tech support. They told me when cleaning the front of the plasma( i have the 503) to use a lint free cloth, wipe in ONE direction only...up to down, down to up ect, not circular movement!....Also you can use Windex!....just thought i would pass that on.

Thanks for the post buzzy. Especially interesting to hear about Windex being o.k. to use. I've been wondering, and was about to ask this question today on this forum. I was especially concerned about any coating that is on the glass. Yes Maximus, I do see the purple/blue color which I too assume is an anti-glare coating but don't know for sure.

WOW GREAT information buzzyboy..thanks!

But I wouldn't use TOO much index I would just dampen the cloth, windex being sprayed into the corners would not be good.

Max, I have never noticed the purple haze but Lori might have;) give me a minute and I will ask her. :D

Pioneer recommends the cloth which comes with the panel. In the tech manual, they discourage the use of cleaners like Windex.

I've used a soft, damp (not dripping wet) cloth a couple of times and it worked fine.

I believe the purple look referred to is on the inside of the glass, but I may be wrong.

Lisa,

If you can ask Lori, I would appreciate that:)

Jim,

The purple haze is definitely on the outside of the glass. It's interesting that Dana and I are the only ones to notice the purple haze.

You did remove the plastic wrap that was stuck to the face, right?:D

Or perhaps the purple haze comes from inhaling windex.

Seriously, I'll take a peek tonight. Don't recall seeing color, but I do occasionally see a large cross-hatch pattern, sort of like what you can see on a car windshield. I've always thought this was related to the coating that stops the windshield from fragmenting when it breaks.

And no, I wasn't wearing a plaid jacket when I saw it.:p

Nope, sorry, for those of us that came from the Vietnam era-

"Purple Haze" made some fine music.

Always follow whats in the owners manual - thats my take on this subject.

Brucer,

Purple Haze all around,

don't know if I'm coming up or down.

Am I happy or in misery?

Whatever it is, that plasma (girl) put a spell on me.

Max,

Lori said she doesen't see it either..she is a little cranky and geesh she is so hard to work with somedays.:D

To all you other Purple Hazers do not inhale!!

All along the watchtower, I'm being told that Windex is a very bad idea. Water is the liquid of choice and -- if necessary -- a highly diluted, very mild soapy solution.

No ammonia, please.

I'm not experienced but I agree with cheridave here. Follow the advice of the manual using the recommended cleaning equipment while careful not to damage the anti-glare film.

Maintenance and Cleaning

1) Unplug the power cord from the outlet.

2) Cabinet and remote control unit

Never use solvents such as benzene or thinner, which can damage or destroy the coating on the cabinet or the

remote control unit.

Remove dirt by lightly wiping with a soft cloth.

If necessary, slightly moisten the cloth with neutral detergent, diluted with water. In humid conditions, wipe off

condensation with a dry cloth.

3) Screen (front protection panel)

The screen surface (front protection panel)is coated with a delicate anti-glare material. To clean the screen dust off

and wipe lightly with a soft cloth.Do not rub with tissue paper or hard abrasive materials.

Never use solvents such as benzene or thinner, which can discolor the screen or render it opaque.

For cleaning,we recommend the following cloth and fluid.

Name Part Number

Cleaning cloth,wiping cloth AED1197

Cleaning cloth:Minimax GED-009

Cleaning liquid:B4 GEM1004

For light soiling, brush off dust and lightly wipe with Minimax. In case of heavy soiling, brush off dust, then wipe with

Minimax with its corner lightly moistened with B4.Be sure to wipe with dry Minimax after B4 dries out as there may

be unevenness remaining otherwise.

4) Vents

Every month, remove dirt from the vent openings that house fans on the sides and rear of the main unit, using a

vacuum cleaner set to its lowest suction setting.Be sure to switch off the power on the main unit before cleaning

the vents.

Blocked vents can lead to dangerously high internal temperatures, resulting in malfunctions or fire.

5) Readjustment of White Balance

The unit uses phosphor elements,as do CRTs.These phosphors degrade over time, reducing brightness.Since

green and blue phosphors degrade faster than red,we recommend readjusting the white balance every 1000 hours.

I wouldn't use windex on my plasma.

The best lint free fabric for cleaning is microfiber (Same stuff used to clean eyeglass lens). A while ago I purchased a fairly large sheet, which I have folded behind the plasma. If I see a spec or a smudge, I can wipe it off directly. I use purified water on the corner of the fabric, touch the area gently with it and wipe it off in a single direction (circular motion causes "wipe marks" that reflect light).

Anyway, I love the Hendrix references... Where's Hey Joe, or Cross Town Traffic (my favorite, BTW)?

jim,

really? i hadn't even thought of that - it just seemed liked such an obvious choice.

plus, it doesn't feel oily, and it certainly didn't seem to leave any sort of residue the last time i used it.

still, i think i'm going to check it out and look at it a little closer...i mean, it is basically skin, isn't it? so it makes sense that there might be oils resident in the cloth. man. now i'm worried :( .

thanks for the input.
