When broadcasters send out there material, is it closed captioned? I havent' looked to see if my tv supports it with HDTV or not, and I never seen it that way at a store either. Not that I need it or anything. but I was just curious.

As with everything else in DTV, the captioning is far more powerful and flexible than the old NTSC system. But with that flexibility comes complexity and ill-defined standards that need to be worked out in the battle field. Some stations and networks simply convert the EIA608 NTSC captions to DTV compatable captions.


It will be at least a year however until we see even the first attempts of the advanced captioning capabilities of DTV. There were a few prototype hardware boxes at the NAB convention last April.
