Ok here is the situation, I have a Samsung LN55B640 and a Pioneer DV-420V-K hooked together with a HDMI cable. I'm trying to watch a DVD but could not find a way to turn CC on. I pressed the CC button on tv remote but it says not available?? I looked up through the player setting but did not see any options for CC. What could be the problem?

Are you talking about subtitle tracks that are part of the DVD features, or actual closed captioning that is part of the original video signal as broadcast? They are different things.

I just am trying to get the captions working. I did try pressing the subtitle on the player remote but all it says on the TV screen is:

Subtitle

Current/Total

- / -

I also tried pressing the cc button on the TV remote but it display a yellow triangle warning saying Not Available. So just for kick I switched over to component video cable and it now allow me to turn cc on/off but still I do not get any captioning.

The DVDs I am trying to play are History Channel Ice Road Truckers season 1, 2, 3. All of them says CC on back of the box.

This is my first dvd player purchased so I probably should take these DVDs to a relative house and see if they work. That way I can tell if the problem is coming from the DVDs or the player itself.

I would expect it to work over component at 480i. Do you have a progressive scan option? Try turning that off.

CC processing over HDMI is rare.
